In a press conference following Benfica’s 2-2 draw with Braga, Jose Mourinho stated that next Monday, May 18, after the Portuguese league concludes, he will finally be able to “speak about his future,” whether that means staying at Benfica or returning to Real Madrid.
When asked by reporters if he still intended to remain at Benfica, as he had expressed in March, Mourinho declined to discuss his future while there is still one match left in the league. “The last week of the championship is not the time to think about the future or contracts,” the coach said.
“From the moment we entered this final phase, I decided I didn’t want to listen to anyone, that I wanted to be isolated in my workspace. There is a match against Estoril, and from Monday I will be able to answer what my future as a coach will be and the future of Benfica,” he added.
Mourinho’s future is widely speculated to be at Real Madrid, replacing Arbeloa, but he again insisted that he has not spoken “with anyone from another club.” Despite persistent questions from journalists, the Portuguese manager refused to provide details about his next step, as he has for the past few days.
“And I’ll leave it at that, because I don’t want to start next season with a suspension. There’s only one game left, only eight days. Relax, it’s just one week,” he concluded.
