Southampton booked their place in the Championship playoff final after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Middlesbrough in the second leg of the semifinal, following a goalless draw in the first leg. The team, managed by Tonda Eckert and featuring Bayern loanee Daniel Peretz, will now face Hull City at Wembley Stadium on May 23 for a chance to return to the Premier League.
If Southampton succeed in winning promotion, media reports indicate that a purchase obligation for Peretz will be triggered, with a transfer fee of around €8 million.
The match started with a shock for Southampton, as Riley McGree put the visitors ahead in the third minute. However, before halftime, the home side equalized when Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn punched a shot into the air, and Ross Stewart rose highest to head the ball into the net from close range.
The second half turned into a tense battle with few clear chances, leading to extra time. In the 116th minute, Shea Charles sent the St. Mary’s Stadium into ecstasy by steering a right-wing cross with his left foot toward the far post, finding the net past all defenders. The celebrations were wild.
