Many dog owners are surprised to see their puppy chewing on a blanket, a stuffed toy, or even its own bed before falling asleep. While it might seem like a simple quirk or an insignificant gesture, experts explain that this behavior is actually linked to a calming and security mechanism learned during the first weeks of life.
This behavior, known as “sucking behavior,” is especially common in puppies and recalls the act of nursing from their mother. As a result, in many cases, dogs perform this gesture when they are relaxed, tired, or seeking comfort. Far from being a sign of rebellion or misbehavior, it is often interpreted as a way for the animal to self-regulate emotionally.
The phenomenon has even been analyzed in veterinary studies published by the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, which mentions so-called “blanket sucking” or “flank sucking.” According to this research, some dogs develop this habit as an emotional relief response or as a repetitive behavior linked to well-being.
Specialists point out that in most cases, it is not a problem. If the animal simply nibbles or sucks on a piece of fabric while resting and shows no signs of anxiety, it is considered a relatively normal behavior during certain stages of development.
However, the context changes when this behavior becomes excessive. Veterinarians warn that it can become a problem if the dog shows constant nervousness, obsessive dependence on the habit, or ends up breaking and swallowing pieces of fabric. In such cases, there could be a compulsive component or one related to stress and anxiety.
Some experts also note that this behavior may be more frequent in puppies separated from their mother too early or in particularly sensitive animals. Still, they insist that each dog has a different personality and that not all develop this type of habit.
In short, that seemingly odd gesture of falling asleep while cuddling and nibbling on a blanket has a much more emotional explanation than it appears. For many puppies, it is simply a way to feel protected and calm in their environment.
